Anytime, Anywhere Learning 2019

Dear Distinctive Schools Families,

Happy Summer!

Summer is a wonderful time for students to reflect on the things that they’ve learned throughout the year, try to apply their learning in the world around them, and explore their curiosities!  Our Anytime, Anywhere Learning efforts this year are all about students having a voice in what they learn over the summer.

We want students to have an invigorating summer, and keeping their brains working is important.  See the attached flyer for some great ideas for their learning.

We recommend that students read at least 20 minutes per day every day, even in the summer.  Talking with students about what they read and sharing opinions is a great way to support them with little effort.  We also recommend sharing how you use math in your everyday life. Helping students understand how they might use their skills and to communicate with others about their learning is an excellent way to make their learning “stick.”

Explore!  Whether it’s a local park, one of the many Chicago or Detroit attractions, or international travel, encourage students to think about how what they’ve learned connects to what they see in the world.  Look at these free museum days:
Chicago-https://chicago.curbed.com/2018/1/9/16871088/chicago-museums-free-admission-days
Detroit-https://www.greatstartwayne.org/freemuseumdays

Finally, encourage students to share their summer learning experiences with others in face to face interactions or social media.  Tag or follow other students’ work on facebook, instagram, or twitter using #DSSummerLearning.

Below are local library addresses.  Students can even get free books at all local libraries:

  • Bucktown‐Wicker Park Library 1701 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
  • Humboldt Park Library 1605 N Troy St, Chicago, IL 60647

Estimadas familias de Distinctive Schools,

¡Feliz verano!

Chicago-https://chicago.curbed.com/2018/1/9/16871088/chicago-museums-free-admission-days
Detroit-https://www.greatstartwayne.org/freemuseumdays

On both Tuesday, September 5th and Wednesday, September 6th, we will dismiss early at 1:00 pm. Please make arrangements for these early dismissals.

Lunch Updates

If your child qualifies for free and reduced lunch, or if you anticipate qualifying for free and reduced lunch, food will be available for your child on Tuesday. Until all of the applications have been received and processed, we’ll work together to make sure our students have good, healthy lunch options right from the start. If you are unsure about your status, feel free to send your child with a brown-bag lunch for the first week of school.

Transportation Updates

Bus routes- Because we continue to receive students every day, bus routes are still being finalized. As soon as we have our final bus routes, we will contact you with your child’s routing information, so please be sure to check your email periodically throughout the weekend. We’ll also be sure to post information on our Facebook page.

Walkers

If your child walks home from school, please be certain to send a note with your child on Tuesday, so we know it’s ok to allow them to walk from Distinctive College Prep - Harper Woods.

We are pleased to share that we will be providing before and after school “latch key” programming for our students. In order to participate in this opportunity, students must be registered, and registration materials can be completed and submitted to our main office. Our “latch key” programming will start on Monday, September 11th.

Enrollment Updates

We are thrilled to share that we have met our enrollment targets, but we still have a few seats available for new students.
